Sun Tan Causes Symptoms Treatments and Home Remedies

What is Tanning

Tanning is a procedure of increased skin pigment, scientifically called melanin which is due to exposure to sunlight. This is the body’s natural response to protect the skin from sun damage. Since body releases melanin right under the surface of the skin whenever exposed to harsh rays of sunlight. This in turn helps in the absorption of radiation from the ultraviolet (UV) rays.

  • Higher are the UV rays, higher is the pigmentation, and more dark is the tan. Different areas of the body are prone to tan like the face, arms, legs, feet, hands, neck, and back.
  • Tan is naturally visible in comparison to the other body parts which are not exposed to sunlight.
  • In scientific terms, the cells of the skin have exposure to the UV rays from the sun, this kicks the safety mode. The melanin from the melanocytes is moved to the keratinocytes which are skin cells of the surface area.
  • Being a security mechanism, the melanin pigment blocks out the UV radiation from any kind of further cell damage.
  • Melanin is gathered on the cell’s nucleus top, like an umbrella. This procedure occurs in every skin cell exposed to the sun exposure.

Well, this is the reason that tanning is visible over the bare part of the body.

individuals with light skin tone do not create an optimum amount of melanin pigment, hence, making the exposed areas of the skin get burnt. Sunlight rays have two kinds of UV rays:

  • UVA
  • UVB

UVA and UVB rays trigger the melanocytes when they penetrate the lower layer of the epidermis. The trigger produces melanin, which leads to tanning.

  • The exterior layer of skin is home to melanin which is a darkening agent. Melanin is the one that is responsible for setting up the skin tone and protecting the skin from the UV rays of the sun.
  • Whenever the skin is exposed to the rays of the skin, it produces more melanin and is tanned.

Prolonged amounts of sun exposure create skin damage leading to sunburns, hence lowering the skin elasticity and creating premature aging.

How To Know If The Skin Is Tanned?

skin type

If your skin is experiencing more than one shade of variation then it is called tanning. A scale of Fitzpatrick describes the skin type and is a standard scale followed all over the world. The scale is a measure to estimate the response of different types of skin to ultraviolet light.

What Are The Reasons Behind Tanning?

Tanning can have harmful consequences if not addressed properly as it is proof of DNA injury to the skin. It damages the skin cells and levels up the visible signs of aging. The reasons behind tanning depend upon the skin type. Some skin types burn and never tan and some burn easily and tan with difficulty.

Still, let us take a look at the major reasons for sun tan:

👉 Exposure from UVA

UVA rays are one of the most dangerous elements of skin tan. It penetrates into the deep layers of the skin leading to cell damage. Melanocytes release melanin which leads to the brown and dark color of the skin.

👉 Exposure from UVB

UVB rays are the ones that harm or burn the upper layers of the skin. Exposure to the UVB rays outpours during the summer season and lowers during the winter months, as the ozone layer of Earth blocks most of the UVB rays in dependence on the weather. Unlike, UVA it is not the one that triggers the melanocytes, it is the one that prompts the DNA to damage which further boosts the production of melanin.
